Farm Beginnings…
My name is Ashleigh, and my husband is Joe. We have five children; three girls and twin boys- a full house! Our property is nestled in Fauquier county, and we couldn’t love it more. We have a lovely little farm tucked away from the road to raise our children. Our dream has always been to live off of our land- to make it work for us. This is no small task, not the least while trying to raise small children. Farming is HANDS ON. Most lessons have to be learned the hard way, after many failed attempts. This can mean years before success. And oh boy, have we seen some failures and successes.
Our little operation began with ten black welsh mountain sheep- a hardy small breed. We fell in love with them immediately! We have spent years breeding and caring for them, as they in turn provide for our family. The lows of caring for a flock can be very low- it is life and death, and usually in the coldest snaps of winter. Our sheep lamb from late January through the spring, so we get to witness our barn go from the depths of struggle to joyous leaps of life every year on repeat. Every year is a new learning experience, and I doubt we will ever stop trying to “figure it out”. Our flock now sits around 25-30 sheep, and one of the most beautiful things to see out of the corner of your eye when passing a window is them out grazing the pasture.
As our children all grow in to school age, our eyes have set sight on growing and expanding our farm. Making our little slice of paradise out in the country work for us is the goal! We work the land, and it will work for us. This is how the idea of flower farming came to be…
